The Hauppauge HD PVR is compatible with mac, I've been using it for at least six months with no problem playing and recording in HD. You need to purchase elgato software's EyeTV in order to use it, but the interface and editing are WAY better than the stock software they include for windows.

Highlights of this unit: HD signals captured look fantastic and I've never had a problem with skips or audio desync. Also the unit natively captures to h.264 which saves my computer from having to work too hard capturing and encoding on the fly. Great compression, great video quality and I can upload straight to youtube, it looks fantastic. For example:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAoOrB8LMjE

I just captured, trimmed and exported from EyeTV and uploaded straight to youtube.

Problems with this unit: SD signals work funny when capturing so I still use my DVD recorder for SD game system recording AND the recording is done through component cables rather than HDMI, which would be nicer. The blackmagic card does capture from HDMI. I have no idea how its software works though, or if compression is done on-board.

The HD PVR does have functional beta Linux drivers available. I don't know if they support the IR remote or the IR blaster functionality of the HD PVR, but I know (and have tested) that it does support capturing 720P component and 5.1 audio on Ubuntu Linux.

Also, you don't need a powerful PC to record. The HD PVR does all the encoding using a hardware encoder, and the PC only needs to save the data stream to disk. Displaying the movies afterwards though is extremely CPU intensive and I would recommend a very fast CPU, GPU assisted decoding, or play it back on something like a PS3.
