Is there a market for a $400 Xbox 360?
With the recent news of the Limited Edition Modern Warfare 2 Xbox 360, we had to ask ourselves – is there still a market for a $400 console? The Wii is $250 and will likely soon be $200, the PS3 Slim is just $300, and the arcade version of the Xbox 360 is only $200. Without even mentioning the struggling economy, can Microsoft really expect this $400 Xbox 360 to sell?
It’s odd that Microsoft is introducing higher-end models of the Xbox 360 as other companies try to lower their price. The Wii is almost certainly going to be dropping to $200 soon, and has been sticking with only one SKU. The Playstation 3 has cut out some SKUs, and now sits with a single model, the PS3 slim. Microsoft, on the other hand, now sits with plenty of SKUs on the market. They have the arcade model, the elite model, and there are still pro models to be found, although that SKU is now discontinued. Now, with the Modern Warfare 2 Edition console, Microsoft is expanding their lineup even more. Other SKUs have also been rumored, such as a Forza 3 edition.
Are gamers really prepared to drop twice as much as the Arcade unit on this limited edition console? Time will tell, but Microsoft is certainly going against the grain here. Introducing a new, higher-end model rather than lowering the price like Sony and Nintendo can be a gamble. Is a 250GB hard drive, Modern Warfare 2, extra wireless controller, and a new paintjob worth $200 more than the Arcade unit? We’ll see.

do you even need to ask?
It will sell 2 copies world wide just like forza 2.
LOL no offence but get your facts straight. Microsoft has cut down the SKUs too two, the Arcade and Elite although there are still old ones around and a few with games these are the only two now

its one thing for stores to make their own bundles at their expense but I think that numbers are numbers and 400$ looks expensive no matter what.
Its kind of like Sony trying to justify a the value of the ps3 at 599, 499 and 399$… yes you are getting a great deal but 400$ price tag is a turn for those who see HD consoles as very expensive. The Xbox 360 enjoyed and still enjoys the illusion of being the least expensive console and unlike THWIP71 most consumers who purchased a Wii (but not a 360 and PS3) will not see past the 399$ price tag to the money you save by getting this bundle.
Seriously, I question this move. 90% of The people who are planning on buying MW2 either have a 360 or PS3 already with two controllers.
This is much better than the Uncharted PS3 bundle. That bundle offered an extra 80GB of hard drive space and an older game for $100 more. This new collectors edition has a unique decorative cover, an extra 90GB of hard drive space, a $60 game and an extra controller all for $100 more. The Elite was just $400 a month ago so this is perfectly acceptable and will be sold out soon.
At $400 for 360 with a game and 250GB hard drive it doesnt look appealing :/ Call me what you want buy PS3 at $299 or $300 if you like with a “Western Digital 1 TB Caviar Green SATA” at $84.99 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 at $59.99. Thats
PS3 = $300 (we wont be unfair to xbox by missing out the dollar of a difference.
1 TB Hard Drive $84.99 (which is x 4 times the size of 360 bundle.
Copy of MW2 = $59.99 ( exact same price as 360 version @ amazon.com
= $450 (including any postage and delivery charges that not bad deal) Puts you with so much space it will be a hard challenge to fill it.
IF….. you being 5 years old about this lets take it one step further shall we…
PS3 = $300 @amazon.co.uk
Western Digital 1 TB Scorpio Blue SATA 5400 RPM = $42.99 @ ebay and amazon.com
Copy of MW2 = $59.99 ( exact same price as 360 version @ amazon.com
= $410 (this includes postage and delivery charges)(excluding this is $402.98.

That means lovely bundle with PS3 slim, Game, controllers, massive hard drive, wi-fi built in and blu ray.
= $410
vs
A designer 360 console + 250GB hard drive + Game, controllers and wired headset. (Missing that wi-fi peripheral) expect to pay $76.99 and Xbox 360 12 Month Live Gold Card $39.99.
= $516.97 (Postage and packaging $520 )
So what do you think more sensibily priced and gives you more value?
THE PRICES HAVE BEEN TAKEN FROM AMAZON.COM AND EBAY AS OF 16TH SEPT 2009 AT 17:01 GMT TIME. POSTAGE AND DELIVERY IS ESTIMATED WITH POSSIBLE DIFFERENCE OF UP TO +/- $10.
This is a good deal and all, but like what some guy said before. The vast majority of people that are getting the game have either a 360 or ps3 already. There’s no point for people to buy this bundle anymore. The people that dont have a 360 yet but want one were probably waiting for a price drop. Now that the price did drop why would they go get a more expensive console?
Microsoft just wants money. There is no reason this bundle couldn’t sell for the $300 price point they have now (when you take into how much hard drives cost today). At the most this bundle should only be around $320 or so.
Relax folks, this is not a new permanent sku. This unit will be manufactured in very limited numbers, and will sell to collectors and other hardcore type gamers and 360 fans. For the small number of these units that will be made, there will be plenty of buyers. Heck, if I was rich I would get one, if for no other reason then I wouldn’t mind a 360 that almost no one else has.
