Activision wants online fees for Call of Duty

Activision seems to be on quite a roll with pissing off their user base.  Their newest declaration may top the heap: Activision wants to start charging an online fee to play their Call of Duty games, similar to World of Warcraft.

Speaking at BMO Capital Market Conference, the CFO of Activision Blizzard, Thomas Tippl, said, “You should expect us to test and ultimately launch additional online monetization models of some of some of our biggest franchises like Call of Duty.”

While he admits it may be difficult to replicate the same format that World of Warcraft uses, there is no doubt that Tippl is looking forward to charging even more to play Activision’s games.  I guess charging $60 for the games with a few $10 map packs thrown in isn’t enough…

Are you serious? If they start charging online fees to play a $70 game, I won’t ever buy a single Call of Duty again.

They do that, i will never buy a COD game ever again…

Personally I want to see this happen. I finally want to see the Greedy people come out and start charging people for everything, so then People will finally Stand up and say ” You know what F U I’m not going to pay prices like this anymore” and will finally stand up instead of continuing to get price gouched during a recession. Activison are starting to be one hell of a Greedy Company and I hope they fail miserably in their attempts to get more money. In my opinion gaming is starting to become a joke.

You have the Wii with it’s motion controls which could be used in a worth while way but the developers and publishers just want to make a quick buck so the controls end up being useless and waggle controls.

Then you also have the PS3 & 360 which have much greater potential but everything they have to offer isn’t being used & every single game is shipped with broken features that have to be patched because they don’t properly test their titles anymore. In fact games are getting shorter & shorter and instead of them making them longer they are charging you for DLC that is probably already on the disc to extend you gameplay.

So you end up paying $60 for the game and up to $20-$30 for extra DLC and now they want to charge you a monthly fee on top of that. F U guys the gaming industry is turing out like everything else giving you less and charging more for it. Well I just won’t do it!!! While I don’t sucumb to buying things used, instead what I do is wait quite a while and end up purchasing games when they have gone down in price. So I might buy a PS3 game when it goes down to $30 and then buy the DLC for it and it comes out to the original $60 or most of the time $40-$50. It is time we need to show them with our Wallets that we won’t pay more for less.

Sounds like Hari Kari without the respect.

I doubt XBL will be affected. I mean NO ONE will pay to play a game on top of paying for XBL. Everyone simply needs to show them that we own their pocket books by simply boycotting everything activision and sticking with it. I’m not talking about digitally signing a boycott… I mean action. Smash your guitar hero guitars, buy Rockband, Play Halo or some other FPS other than COD. SHOW THEM THAT WE OWN THEM NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND… I mean that is if push comes to shove.

  • Kee said:

greedy bastards. Their online is good, but worth more money than it already costs? Fuck no. Bad move in my opinion. what kind of jackass would buy a game and then pay even more to play it? This is an absolute disgrace. Well, that’s corporate greed for you. Activision will have lost a faithful customer if they go ahead with that one. Poor show Thomas Tippl. Poor show indeed

well… welcome to the future folks. i must assume the companies and they’re investors would prefer a steady stream of cash (aka paid subscriptions) over a few weeks of great sales. DLC does not ensure them revenue, we dont HAVE to purchase it. Shame on them for not putting in the effort to make it enticing enough. So if subscriptions are to be the norm, there better damn well be a simple way to pay (like XBL) and games’ MSRP better go wayyyy down. (ex. $19.99 disc, $3.99/mo.) This may be easier to implement by a large company as the online fee would need to “umbrella” all of there titles to justify it. Also it would be more successful on PS3 as there are no additional costs to use the PSN’s online features. Next gen consoles will probably lack a physical media standard and games will be subscription based.
ONE GOOD NOTE – If developers/publishers fail to constantly update and keep interest in their software high, we as consumers simply cancel our account and they lose, not us! By paying monthly subscriptions we can ensure they continue to release quality DLC in a timely manner :)

It’s a shame Infinity Ward is owned by Activision… It would be nice to hear would some of the people that put in the time making the games think about Activision’s proposition.

    …on a side note…
COD: MW2 feels like a new girl friend. Her chest is bigger but she’s not as good in bed lol. Maybe I just need more time to get used to her? Maybe I’m suffering from withdrawal over me ex :(

~Wow this is has yet to hit a very low in the gaming industry for Activision to wanna start charging people to play their damn games. I’d like to see them do this. The amount of fan support will drop off like no other let alone their servers will be open due to barely anyone logging on. I mean seriously I spend $60 as is while waiting in line to pick up this game get it home to play it. Now you wanna charge me an additional $60 to continue playing and charge me another $10 or so for DLC’s. How are you going to work things out for the 360 owners who have to pay to use online multiplayer.

Activison is going to go in to serious trouble. Obviously they didn’t learn from the 80’s, They lost out to Nintendo for trying to keep games “console only”, Nintendo came out with the Game-Boy Pocket. $70 for a game and some extra maps. In a time when the country is hurting, They want to get more money, now I see why Infinity Ward dumped them.

    omg fuck that shit

  • Lee said:

This is crazy, I’m done with Activision if this happens. So does this mean that they will charge for Blizzard games as well. The main draw for these games was the free online play.

$60 for the games and $15 map packs was ridiculous enough. They tested what people were willing to pay for the map packs. They priced them ridiculously and people still swallowed them up. Now they are going keep pushing, and these same people will pay for it.
