Why does the Playstation 3 continue to receive poor ports?

22 December 2009 15,566 views 40 Comments

Here we are, three years after the release of the Playstation 3, and multi-platform games are continuing to receive shoddy ports.  The most recent example of this is with the release of Bayonetta.  First, the game received a perfect score from Japanese magazine Famitsu for the Xbox 360 version, but only received a 39/40 for the PS3 port.  If that wasn’t bad enough, now IGN has given Bayonetta a 9.5 for the Xbox 360, but just an 8.2 for the Playstation 3.  What gives?

When the Playstation 3 first was released and poor ports were aplenty on the system, most of us chalked it up to the fact that developers have not had enough time to figure out the PS3’s hardware, which was much more advanced and complicated than in past generations.  Over time, we began to see exclusive PS3 titles look stellar – an ode to the fact that the system was indeed very powerful.  Titles like Metal Gear Solid 4 and Uncharted 2 proved that the Playstation 3 was capable of producing the best graphics around, but ports virtually never look better on the PS3 than they do on the Xbox 360.

The answer is not because developers can’t make titles better on the Playstation 3, but it is because developers won’t put the effort into it.  Somewhere along the line, developers have found out that it is cheaper to make games on the Xbox 360 and then port it to the Playstation 3.  That doesn’t necessarily mean that all ports are bad – there are plenty of multi-platform games that are nearly identical on both systems.  Rather, it just means that the Playstation 3 will almost never have the superior game when compared to the Xbox 360, ignoring the possibility of exclusive content.

It’s a shame that developers do not feel like they need to put the time into the Playstation 3 version of the game, because it feels like we’re all getting ripped off just a little.

You can purchase both the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 versions of Bayonetta for just $54.99 at Amazon.

Lazy devs. I wonder if in the next generation Sony will make their hardware more “standard” like Microsoft.

I agree, but one thing you’re saying is the fact that it seems that the developers may fear that if the PS3 version is superior 360 version is not sold since they apparently have to maintain the illusion of power the 360, this was demonstrated when people Tecmo released Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 this version is graphically superior than the 360-talking but this only occurred after 1 year of being the 360 which had not happened if they were coming at the same time .
I believe firmly that the developers mind these disrespecting ps3 consumers apparently are not enough, enough to be taken seriously.

LOL at all gamers who believe the marketing crap about power of the ps s&*!the 360 does nt lack power,it lacks disc space (which can be circumvented if they release it multy dvd games, and great developers with balls to the ground!microsoft studios never clearly does nt have the amount of expirience such as naughty dog, polyphony and konami, which were some of the best game developers 4 the ps1!!We shall see more improvements on the xbox 360 if all developers stop relying on the 5years old unreal 3 engine!I ll laugh my arse so loud when crysis 2 comes out and still the 360 gets the best version of both….and then all ps fanboy will accuse crytek that gets paid or something like that for bringing a 2-3 times graphically better game than kidzone2 on the microsoft platform…WAit till alan wake wakes up from bed!!the future shall clear this!

  • nutbear96 said:

Games that don’t make it to PS3 are because Microsoft owns them or the more basic answer is because some devs can’t afford a Blu-Ray disc! In the awesome age of PS2 and Xbox must games were on both consoles if not just on PS2. But now that PS3’s technology is too high tech for some devs they don’t want to make it! You 360 fans/fanboys will think that I’m lying! I’m not! In the drawing board of any project for a videogame they think what should it be called, what genre, what platform, and profits and losses of all these different options! And some times devs don’t have a good relationship with Sony/Microsoft! Valve obviously is one of those devs, it seems that they have no respect for Sony and Sony seems to fell the same way!

You speak the truth, Mr. OP.

    I believe that
    1) PS3 cannot handle some types of games that the 360 can. The reverse is also true. The architecture are too different. Some places where the 360 excels, the PS3 fails, and the reverse is also true.
    2) It’s TOO EXPENSIVE for developers to redesign the games to take full advantage of the PS3 hardware. They are struggling developing for even one platform now.
I don’t think it’s as much lazy as there is the money issue.

  • Luis X said:

While I agree partially with the article, there is something missing. The fact that the 360 and PS3 have totally different arcitectures. Which also translates into them having different strengths. How so you say the PS3 is just more powerful. Yes and No, it’s the way the memory is placed on the PS3. It has memory for the system and memory for the video card. The 2 memories are different speed which case a sort of bottleneck. The 360 memory is all the same speed and cna be configured, they can add more memory for the system and take memory not being used by the video card and vice versa, give memory to the video card and take memory that the system is not using.

2)Make a patch by the release date

    or we won’t buy it

Does no one take pride in their work anymore? Hardware differences aside, if developers use the performance of the 360 version of a game as a target for the port, through hard work and clever programming they should be able to make an identical game on the PS3 or they should be ashamed.

Also, it seems like this cycle may continue. Devs don’t want to invest the time or money in a good port for the PS3 because it might not sell as many as the 360 version. But gamers who only own a PS3 aren’t going to buy a bad port because they want to devs to shape up first. As a gamer, I’m willing to pass on crappy ports because there are plenty of other good games to play made by developers who care about their work. So if others share this viewpoint, it looks like developers will need to shape up. Either that, or just develop for the 360… Even if it means more console exclusives for the 360 I’m fine with it because I’m tired of hearing about these half-assed efforts.

Sorry but the Xbox can’t handle 60fps and 1080p games like the PS3 can.

I ain’t gonna buy it, if I do it’ll be 2nd hand. I ain’t gonna support lazy dev.
I feel sorry for Sega having to put up with Platinum.

I respect the developers who simply make their games for 360, and not for PS3 instead of doing a bad job, it is clear that many of these developers are focused on doing one version of the game, instead of making a version for where each exploit the strengths of each device, but let’s face the developers with 3 years experience yet do not care about the ps3 and they can do well simply to make an identical set and running the risk that the fanatics 360, do not buy thinking that they deserve more, as they did in the case of Final Fantasy 13, which was mutilated, all in order to allow fans of 360 will not clash with reality.

The authors of these stupid articles never understand the issues at hand. The content was designed to max out the xbox’s pixel fillrate, obviously the PS3 lower fillrate was gonna be a problem. The big issue to be asked should be why the sega port team didn’t reduce some of the effects so the game could hold a higher framerate; I mean the xbox version is dropping frames on the falling clocktower level, the PS3 version must be impossible to play.

  • Oliver said:

That’s completely wrong to say there’s a huge hap between the ps3 and xbox 360. Just bcoz there’s only one game that’s looks awesome – Uncharted 2 doesn’t make the ps3 a vastly superior machine like some of you said. In fact the 360 can produce similar games. Have a look at Mass Effect 2 in HD.

GEEZ…This is such an old topic, i dont know why it even warrants being headline news on game news sites. The simple answer is its too risky/expensive to develop exclusive stuff for PS3 unless you have a sweet deal like one of the 1.5 party devs where you get paid up-front by Sony. Why take 1-3 years, to learn and perfect PS3 coding skill when you don’t even know if it will return your investment? Thats like me arguing for u guys to all take 3 years to learn C++ or ActionScript when you’re not even sure if u will be able to get a job in the field.

Its not because they are LAZY, its because in these hard Economic times, a bad decision can TANK a company/Studio quicker than in years past. Look at what happened to “The Orphanage” after taking a chance on “The Spirit” (Look it up). And if you guys are so adamant towards seeing this stuff, why don’t you gather up a group of people, quit your jobs, learn the PS3 Dev Kit and come up with some KILLER EXCLUSIVES! because it seems like you all believe that they will be sure-fire money makers! Right?

Im no speaking about other games or exclusives Baytonetta constructed for xbox hardware first ,with advantages of Xenus GPU like EDRAM,no Cell or RSX in PS3 can replace that

  • name said:

because it takes time and effort to make ps3 games.
most developers code a game for the 360, than directly port it across to the PS3 making absolutely no changes.
the 360s CPU is designed to do everything, it does not use the GPU to back it up, it does not have SPUs to back it up.
the PS3 does, so dumping everything onto the PPE and expecting it do run perfectly is like expecting me to hop into a plane and fly it perfectly with absolutely no lessons.
    not going to happen!
thats why EA games are allways on par, if not better on the ps3, because the begining of 2008 EA started using the ps3 as their lead platform.
cant believe developers are so freaking lazy and have not followed suit.
    why are people so lazy?
they look at something, see its more work now but much easier in the long run so they take the short road.
using the ps3 as the lead platform is harder getting everything running.
but once its running its a breeze to get over to the 360.

  • Guy said:

Well, if no developers can manage the PS3, then perhaps it’s not the developers? Perhaps it’s the console itself?

The problem is that not only PS3 ports are worse then their X360 counterparts. The problem is that even games developed first and primarly on the PS3 (Tekken, Assassins Creed, etc) are superior on their X360 ports.

Now, we do see some damn fine exclusives on the PS3, but because they’re exclusive we can never know how they would have turned out on the X360. Would they look worse? How worse exactly? Perhaps they would have look even better if the developer were to put some effort into a X360 version?

It would be stupid to boycott Bayonetta only because it looks better on the X360: it’s still a wonderful game on the PS3, and probably the best H&S you’ll get until GOW3 is released.
If you do this, at the same time you can boycott any game that is also available on PC, because PC games on a proper rig will always look better.

The only ones to blame is Sony, for promising us a superior console with DA CELL, and us for actually falling for this marketing ploy.

  • Riz said:

The only reasons PS3 get doggy Ports are Microsoft pays the developer to work with Direct X more, and Once the game is created in Direct X they need to port it to OGL which is allot of effort then Direct X because you need to create a work base before even creating the game (Direct X does the work base for you). And Final when there working with OGL there’s normally like a few months to the deadline so they end up making a hole lot of mistakes with the game without caring.

Crytek gets paid for better version on 360? lol! What a joke! Still, 360 version could be better if Crytek doesnt know how to utilize PS3’s Cell processor and the SPUs. It’s their first attempt to make game for the PS3 architechture, that is totally different from what they have used to.

Not true. EA handles PS3 pretty good nowadays. And what about Rocksteady behind Batman AA, Guerilla Games, Insomniac, Naughty Dog, Infinity Ward, Criterion Games, Tecmo and so on…

“The problem is that even games developed first and primarly on the PS3 are superior on their X360 ports”

Also not true. There are multiplatform games that are better on PS3 for example Burnout Paradise, Ninja Gaiden 2, Oblivion, Ridge Racer, Dynasty Wars 6, Red Alert 3, Bionic Commando, Terminator and so on…

It’s the fact that one of the next gen console is better than the other. The dilemma for developers is to either develop great games or develop of a large install base. And developers have done the latter they have gone after the big bucks and have not played the field evenly short term verses long term. Its now that AAA titles like Uncharted 2, Killzone 2 and God of war 3 and others are here that the realization is clear therefore this article. The gaming community is beginning to realize the true next gen system and the real AAA games. The thing is the large install base argument has faded and real questions are been asked.

  • Agent75 said:

Because developers prefer to 360 and PC which are similar to develop for. So all in all, it’s down to lazyness.

I have all the 3 main consoles, If a game comes out on the 360 and PS3, I always get the 360 version. I noticed this pattern a while back. I only use the PS3 for exclusives now, not that there’s many…

  • Red said:

I dont understand why this is still being debated. Effort takes money. having extra staff that knows how to use the Cell architecture takes money. These devs arent lazy, theyre restricted. Bayonetta is a new IP, which means it did not get nearly the kind of budgets bigger titles get.

Everything is about money, folks. If we want less shitty games and ports, the costs of producing a game needs to come down. Simple as that. If developers werent so confined by budget, we wouldnt need to have the mass of cookie cutter safe bet games, or games with awful pc/ps3 ports.

  • Nuno Figo said:

It’s not a question of power, obviously.
Just not enough work on the PS3 version, pure and simple.

Just rememember the previous console generation. Xbox was clearly much more capable than the PS2. It’s specs were much higher, yet 90% of multi-version games were equal or worse on Microsoft’s console, when compared to the PS2 version.

I won’t support developers that don’t respect their clients. Thus… no Bayonetta for me (I will probably get it on the 2nd hand market).
Obviously, I know this will only fuel this vicious cycle: poor PS3 versions – less PS3 sales – less investment on PS3 ports – poor PS3 ports.

  • Dr_Jones said:

I’m not worried about the quality of the Bayonetta port because apparently Sega and Sony are working together to resolve the issues plaguing the PS3 version. By the time it releases state side the 360 and PS3 version should be near identical so hopefully this will be the last time that we hear about crappy ports cause seriously three years into the console, every developer should have a handle on the technology. The port really isn’t Sega’s fault since, technically platinum games deserves more of the blame. Seriously don’t have the the ability to create an effective port?

Alan Wake doesn’t even look all that good, hell Killzone 2 still looks better than that. Besides wait til Heavy Rain and God of War 3 hit =) those are games where it’s at! And lets not forget somewhere down the road when FF XIII versus comes out that will be THE BEST game ever graphically and gameplay wise

  • Brennan said:

I believe that PS3 is the superior console in hardware and software ability and that it truly does come down to the developers. I think we all need to realize that these companies are out to make money and the concept when making money in America is spend the least to make the most. That’s why a good majority of non-asia developed games are designed around the X-box, because they don’t have to go the extra distance to make something great. It’s almost like these developers are looking for a one hit wonder like musicians. looking at the more stable developers you begin to see the difference, for example EA games, mostly makes sport games, that is what their known for. But their is virtually no huge change from game to game, the graphics improve by about 1% and they update the players, which they could do via DLC. I would almost guarantee that they just pull out a template of some kind. Now on the asian front you have companies like Square-enix, who takes as long as it takes to create something original and pushed to the limits, the problem with pushing it to its limits is that when you then try to port it to something with less capability in the required areas the game suffers in quality. It all comes down to money and patience. we all realize that PS3 is expensive and it has indeed taken awhile to get the game line up moving, but its more about the desired quality of games and when gamers seek true perfection its the developers for sony that I think we should turn to.

  • Skid Row Trash (Xbox 360) said:

The reason is because the Xbox 360 has all the power in 1 processor or something, whereas the PS3 has all the power split into 2 processors. Games are made to run on the 360, but then have to be re-done because the 360 could handle it no problem, but all that power has to be split for the stupid ass PS3, and it doesn’t work all that great doing it this way, obviously/

  • Luisx said:

Boycotting the game will just show the, money managing execs that it’s not worth making the game for the PS3. Companies are there to make money the extra resources will be put into the system that will sell the most copies. This is not a new concept the Xbox and the gamecube were much more powerful then the PS2, but most if not all third party games were made on the PS2 then ported to the others.

Skid Row Trash both system are Multi Core, the problem is that the 360 has a much more flexible memory architecture, the PS3 has a bottleneck in the memory. We can say all the bad stuff about MS, god knows I do, but they are more experienced at computer hardware, OS and networking. The short and sweet is that the 360 can put more memory to be used by the graphics processor or by the system when need be. Another thing is the OS on the 360 uses about 1/2 the memory as the PS3 OS.
